Blue-Cloud at the EOSC Symposium

10 December 2019

The EOSC Symposium, one of the largest European Open Science Cloud events, co-organized by the EOSCsecretariat and other initiatives such as EOSC-hub, GEANT, OpenAIRE and PRACE, took place from 26 to 28 November 2019 in Budapest, Hungary. Stakeholders contributed to the discussion on the implementation of EOSC throughout these intense and stimulating days. Blue-Could took part in the Symposium, showcasing its demonstrators and providing useful insights for the EOSC Governance, its Working Groups, and other projects.

On Tuesday, 26 November, Lennert Schepers of VLIZ, leading the work on the Blue-Cloud demonstrator on Zoo- and Phytoplankton EOV products, participated in the EOSC Use Cases Session, with the presentation "Why little creatures have a big impact in the Blue Cloud". Lennert highlighted the potential of cloud based open science in support of ocean research, thereby illustrating how the Blue-Cloud initiative could stand as a model of a thematic EOSC cloud. On the following day, the Blue-Cloud poster was presented during the Key Exploitable Results Session.

Our Technical Coordinator Dick Schaap from MARIS participated in the panel of the Key Exploitable Results Session and the next day in the EOSC for Life and Environmental Sciences Session. In the latter he presented "EOSC – Life – Blue-Cloud for marine sciences". According to him, Research Infrastructures (RIs) should be major cornerstones of the EOSC as they already have great experience with developing their networks of scientific providers and users, managing metadata, data, data products, and knowledge, applying FAIR principles, and developing and providing various applications in support of science. Moreover, RIs are well advanced in providing support and training to their users as RIs are complex by nature, and researchers need help in navigating them. The desired added-value of EOSC for RIs is access to a powerfull platform for multidisciplinary exchanges and transparent analytical workflows, which will contribute to solving major scientific and society questions. The Blue-Cloud is a federation of several mature and leading marine infrastructures and as such can be considered as a thematic EOSC. For that reason, the Blue-Cloud should become well engaged in the EOSC operation, starting with representation in its core development projects, standing aside with the RI clusters, and complimenting the more technical oriented e-infrastructures.

Blue-Cloud had great visibility at the EOSC Symposium overall, as it was also presented at the EOSC KIOSK and discussed throughout the whole event as one of the most impactful new projects joining the EOSC ecosystem this year.
