Vote for Blue-Cloud in the latest survey on EU missions for healthy oceans!

9 September 2020

How would you tackle adaptation to climate change? Have you got an idea to make cities greener? Do you care about healthy oceans, and healthy soils for food, people and the planet? Do you want to help conquer cancer?

EU missions aim to deliver solutions to some of our greatest societal challenges, such as cancer, adaptation to climate change, healthy oceans, climate-neutral cities and healthy soil and food. The Commission is designing and creating these missions together with input from Europeans to ensure that the missions meet their expectations and needs. As part of this process, an interactive pilot platform has been launched so that anyone can put forward their own ideas and vote for the ones they like best. You can share your views with the Commission in the EU missions’ call for ideas, open from 1 to 14 September 2020.

Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth said:

As part of the future Horizon Europe programme, missions will help define clear targets and find solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing our world, in turn increasing the effectiveness of research and innovation funding. For this we need citizens to express their views, make proposals and engage in their design and implementation. Together, we will make Europe  healthier, greener and more resilient.

In June, the Mission Boards, a broad mix of independent experts from innovation, research, policy making, civil society and practitioner organisations, presented their first proposals for EU missions. Throughout summer, online events have taken place on these proposals around Europe to listen to people’s priorities and gather their ideas. The results of the latest call for ideas will be presented at the online European Research & Innovation Days (22-24 September 2020). At this event, the Mission Boards will also handover their final missions recommendations to the Commission. The selected missions will be announced at the end of 2020 and launched in 2021.

Blue-Cloud and the "Healthy oceans, seas, coastal and inland waters" mission area

One of the five Mission Boards, Healthy Oceans, Seas, Coastal and Inland Watersis particularly relevant to Blue-Cloud and its long-term vision. Through a recently published interim report, the Board proposes to regenerate the European ocean and waters by 2030, by reducing human pressures on marine and freshwater environments, restoring degraded ecosystems and sustainably harnessing the essential goods and services they provide.

Blue-Cloud has submitted a proposal called "Democratizing marine data & information for society and a healthy Ocean", which can be found and supported here.

H2020 Blue-Cloud is demonstrating the potential of web-based open science and will be a key contributor to the Digital Twin Ocean. We call on Mission Ocean to share data via this cyberplatform to harness collective intelligence for a healthy Ocean

This Mission will highlight the importance of Europe’s waters, champion new exploration through science, research and innovation, foster in citizens a desire to protect and recover these resources, leading them towards meaningful actions, make the entire water system an understandable, reliable and vitally relevant topic, thus creating the basis for delivering a common public good. These issues were also at the core of our first workshop, co-located with the All-Atlantic Ocean Research Forum in February 2020.

Contributing to the required digital and policy-related transitions to a healthy planet within the next decade is a fundamental part of Blue-Cloud's work on the Roadmap to 2030, and a key for protecting and restoring the ocean.

Support our proposal by 14 September 2020!
